The Kiwanis Kavaliers, of Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario, announced a new collaborative venture beginning February of 2002. Since the organization's formation in 1971, the Kavaliers' programs have reached more than two thousand youth, and a strong infrastructure had extended its valuable support to other organizations to assist them in achieving their goals.

The Kavaliers are known for putting the "I" in DCI (Drum Corps International) and have proudly represented both Canada and other countries around the globe. In 2001 the organization represented DCI at the World Band Championships held in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The two-week European tour that took the corps through Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands provided the members with unforgettable memories and a great respect for their newfound supporters.

In the fall of 2001 the Tampa Bay Thunder organization approached the Kavaliers to discuss possible opportunities that would benefit individuals participating in both summer programs.

The Tampa Bay Thunder has a short but successful history. While under the direction of Jim Newman, the Thunder had risen to a large Division II competitive corps, finishing 11th in DCI Finals in 2001. The corps extended its program to include more than 160 young members participating in its winter camps. But the need to provide their youth with opportunities to participate in a complete summer schedule within a strong organizational environment was becoming more apparent.

Under the direction of Doug Darwin, the Kavaliers have toured successfully for more than 14 years. A strong support staff and exceptional educational team have made it possible to offer an excellent experience to the Kavaliers youth.

Therefore, the Kavaliers and the Tampa Bay Thunder developed the foundation of a long-term collaborative relationship. Both organizations would offer new opportunities through the sharing of management, support, staff, resources and membership, and would maximize the summer experience for all participants in the Kiwanis Kavaliers' world-class summer program.

The 2002 Kiwanis Kavaliers featured 135 members in a production of 'Hall of Justice,' based on comic superheroes. The new program was designed to offer the best opportunities to strengthen the corps' competitive position, but also to provide the membership and the audience with an entertaining look back at some of their heroes who had fought for justice. The Kavaliers finished 20th in DCI Division I Quarterfinal competition in 2002.

The 2003 offering, 'All You Need is Love,' also placed the 82-member Kavaliers 20th in Quarterfinals. The corps took 22nd place in DCI Quarterfinals in 2004, with music from "West Side Story." Their score of 75.35 was the highest of all the Canadian corps in competition in Denver in 2004.

The Kavaliers offers several current collaborations, including the Sentenelles Colour Guard, the Ventures Colour Guards, and the Spirit Performing Youth Ensemble. All of these groups act independently of the Kavaliers, sharing resources, staff, equipment, management and often membership.
