"The "Black Shields" of Sparta was organized in October 1968, in Mt. Carmel, Ohio as a competitive corps under the direction of Mr. Earl Huff. The corps consists of approximately ninety members and carries two competing color guards in the Midwest Circuit. They will field thirty-seven horns, fourteen drums, thirty-eight girl guard, two captains and two drum majors.
They have as their staff, drums, Bill Ferris; horns, Earl Huff with beginning instructors in Wayne Greis and Norman Root. Business manager is Mrs. Carol Huff, sergeants Karen Dixon and Linda Neal with Jackie Radcliffe and Muff Ulmer doing the major jobs. Their 1970 repertoire consists of: "Man of La Mancha", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "March of the Spartans", "Age of Aquarius", and "Impossible Dream".
The Black Shields are entirely self supporting and within the past year have purchased three buses, a drum line, several new G-F horns and hats and plumes. We'll be looking for them on the field in June."
